Mrs. Kira Reid
Born a "northern girl" from Bridgeport, Connecticut, I've found a welcoming home here in the South. I chose to reside in Atlanta to attend the highest ranked HBCU, namely Spelman College. After graduating Spelman, my parents found themselves lacking entertainment from their "comedic" child, and became residents of Georgia as well. Just months after graduating Spelman in 2001, I began my teaching career at Lovejoy High School in Clayton County.
I am now a veteran educator of 18 years of high school English Language Arts. While my time spent in the classroom would earn me the title of "veteran," I find myself oftentimes in a learning posture in efforts to remain relevant to the changing generation of students in which I teach. In addition to teaching in Clayton County, I've also taught in Dekalb, Rockdale, and Atlanta Public School systems. Some courses I've taught include, but are not limited to the following: Ninth Grade Literature, World Literature, American Literature, and British Literature. In addition to teaching the entire grade level gamut of high school English Language Arts, I've also taught multiple levels and learning styles ranging from the traditional student to gifted and AP. In 2012, I was privileged to be honored by my colleagues of the ELA Department of Mays High School with the Raider Award for English Language Arts Teacher of the Year 2012-2013.
Not only am I a graduate of Spelman College, but Walden University as well. Spelman College is my undergraduate alma mater, where I studied English as my major and Teacher Certification as my minor. While at Spelman, I earned several distinguished invitations to honor societies such as the Mortar Board International Honor Society, and Sigma Tau Delta English International Honor Society. In 2007, I began my pursuit for a graduate degree, formally my Master of Science at Walden University earning a 4.0 GPA.
Currently, my contribution to the field of education is housed here at Douglas County High School. In the last 5 years, I relocated back to Georgia after moving briefly to Charlotte, NC where I taught 9th grade literature at Ardrey Kell High School, so I was proud to return home to Georgia. In the near future, I look forward to introducing a mentorship group for young women, entitled For Ladies Only to help support the needs and career objectives of young teenage women.
I'm so glad to have the opportunity to inspire and incite the minds of your children, and look forward to expanding them even the more. Thanks greatly for this opportunity, and much success lies ahead for the present and future of our children.
